Doctorate of Medicine (DM)
Doctorate of Medicine is a Postgraduate Super Specialty Degree, pursued by those who wish to further study and research in their respective fields of study. Since it is a doctorate programmed, it is necessary that aspirants have completed a PG medical course prior to applying for the course.
A Doctorate of Medicine or DM is very much different from a Doctor of Medicine (MD). Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a postgraduate course whereas DM Course is a PhD level course. To study MD Course the student must complete the MBBS Course. The eligibility criteria for the DM Course is that the student must complete the MD Course.
A DM course in one of the DM colleges in India runs along with the same curriculum pattern as that of an MD course. However, in addition to the course, students will be further qualified and trained in their clinical/practical skills, in research methodologies, theses, and overall communication skills as well. Under the programed, students will be offered training in Clinical Disciplines and practical training such as Advanced Therapeutic, Diagnostic and Laboratory techniques. Each course will consist of subjects that are relevant to the specialization chosen by the candidate.
As per the regulations, a student will be enrolled under the programed as per the recognition offered by a Postgraduate Teacher, in a department, consisting of at least one Professor, Assistant Professor or Lecturer and an Associate Professor or Reader.

- A DM degree gives you a better understanding of the specific system and its diseases and treatments.
- Any patient would prefer visiting an endocrinologist over a general physician with let’s say a thyroid problem.
- Especially in big cities, a DM would offer better employment opportunities and better patient input than only an MD.
DM Course Admission Process
The admission process for DM Course is through Entrance Exams only.
- The Entrance Exams are conducted by State Governments and the Medical Colleges. The students must score more than 50% in the Entrance Exams.
- The number of admitted students in Doctorate of Medicine (DM) Course is 1 student per year, per recognized Post Graduate teacher in the department having a minimum of three faculty members i.e. one Professor, one Associate Professor/Reader & one Assistant Professor or Lecturer.
- The Entrance Exams that the Doctors must sit for are NEET SS, AIIMS SS, JIPMER exam or PGIMER exam
Doctorate of Medicine (DM) Eligibility
To pursue the programed, candidates need to meet one of the following Doctorate of Medicine (DM) eligibility criteria;
- Candidates must have a valid PG Medical degree in either MD/MS or PG Diploma in the relevant course or specialization, w.r.t to the specialization they wish to pursue under DM.
- Candidates must have appeared for one of the Super-Specialty entrance tests conducted in India, at either National, State or University-level. Candidates can appear for NEET-SS, which is conducted by NBE at the national level. Candidates will be selected for the respective courses based on their merit in the qualifying entrance exam.
- Candidates must refer to the eligibility criteria defined by the DM College in India, in which they wish to take admission. Each college will have its own eligibility criteria and accepted entrance exam, to which aspirants must comply.
- Candidates must also ensure that they have secured 50% aggregate score in the PG Medical course. SC/ST/OBC candidates will be required to ensure that they have secured 45% aggregate score in the qualifying degree.
- If candidates have cleared MBBS from the same college/institution or university, then the cumulative performance of the candidates in the National/State/University-level entrance test and the MBBS exam will be considered.
It should be noted that as per the guidelines, 50% of the seats will be field through the performance of the candidates through competitive exams, while, the rest will be filled through management quota.
